PC Data Acquisition
Software can parse the data stream to correlate the analog data with events on one or both of the timing channels, to a resolution of 51 nanoseconds. The one or two optional timing signal inputs make the iDSC 1816 an excellent choice for applications that monitor vibration in rotating assemblies - in the automotive, aerospace, and power generation industries, for example. Software packages integrate data analysis, presentation and instrument control capabilities into a single interface. These programs offer a multitude of features, such as pull down menus and icons, data logging and analysis and real-time graphic displays.
Windows and Linux can do pipelining of transfers, but it involves asynchronous driver calls and brings up tons of potential race conditions, which most lazy driver writers want to avoid. If you use Overlapped IO (Windows terminology) or Bulk Queuing (Linux), it should be possible to get a steady bulk transfer, as the host controller has always enough transfer descriptors to run. Windows and Linux can take a very long time without giving the processor to any specific task. I did no test at all regarding latency in this case.
Burst sampling is just as beneficial in situations where sampling needs to be related to some physical parameter other than time (such as in the example of the rotating machine described earlier). In such applications, however, the burst of samples must be initiated by an external signal, such as a tachometer pulse, rather than by the internal timebase. But on a trigger event a very fast acquisition is performed with maximum sampling speed. This mode allows voltage logging over long periods combined with fast acquisitions of the events with up to 200 MS/s.
Each channel has its own sample/hold amplifier, and all the sample/hold amplifiers are commanded to “hold” the signals at the same instant. Each real-time biological data processing PC card is adapted to input and process biological data from one or more biological data sensors, and is interchangeable with other real-time biological data processing PC cards. A practitioner having three different real-time biological data processing PC cards, for example, each one corresponding to a different biological data collection device, effectively carries three full-sized, powerful diagnostic instruments. Each year over one-third of all chemistry majors go on to Ph.D. Another third of our majors enter medical school.
Each microphone was mounted in a 4×2x1 inch plastic box along with an amplifier. Various amplifier designs were tried and a schematic of one of these designs is shown in Figure 1. Each panel displays the status for up to 16 channels. Each byte sent is converted to two ASCII characters representing the hex value of the Most and the Least Significant Nibbles (4 bits). Additional characters (such as “;”) can be used as control characters.
Each technology has its own individual instrumentation requirements to measure and control system variables. National Instrument?s LabVIEW data acquisition hardware and software module has become one of the most widely used tools to capture, view, and process controls, instrumentation, and power system data both in academia and the industry (Franz, 2003, and Travis, 2002). Each SAM module makes a measuring channel available. SAM modules are available for many measuring sensors - voltage, current, PT100, thermocouples, ICP, bridge signals - with or without galvanic signal isolation.
Adding to this ambiguity, governance and stewardship can be perceived as complicated endeavors. Frameworks help us organize how we think and communicate about complicated or ambiguous concepts. Additional C++ experience has been self-motivated to develop applications with Microsoft MFC to handle dialogs and controls, connecting to a SQL database, and ATL for COM development (completed 5-day instructor-led Microsoft Course 1304). Previous C programming experience (in 1991) with ANSI-C on a DEC 3100 workstation running UNIX, to add down hole elastic wave propagation modeling theory into a large seismology analysis package (ProMax from Advance Geophysical Corp., Denver, CO).
